Program Details:
“Bee the Change “is an educational arts and science program whose three facets build on each other to increase awareness, appreciation, inspiration and action:
1) Theatre Beesentations: Quasimondo Physical Theatre will create an original and inter-active 35-40 minute theatre-work in collaboration with consultants Charlie Koenen and Jacque Troy which will tour to 8 performance sites reaching at least 800 young audience members and their families and teachers in diverse Milwaukee neighborhood schools and parks.
2) Activity Hives: After each performance audience members will be invited to participate in follow-up theme-related hands-on activities such as creating bee habitats, native-flower drawings or bee costumes for parades and bee dances.
3) Resource Guides will be offered for parents and teachers to provide further information and activities to deepen their knowledge and commitment to help our pollinators. These will include potential field trips and information about existing services, encouraging access and participation in the various organizations that serve our pollinators as well as relevant publications, websites and social media.
The program is a partnership between Quasimondo Physical Theatre artists and experienced and knowledgeable consultants Charlie Koenen/Beevangelist, Jacque Troy and sponsoring organizations Groundwork Milwaukee, Arts@Large, Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee County Parks:
*Charlie Koenen is the founding director of Beevangelists, an education and advocacy organization tending beehives throughout the greater Milwaukee area. He brings over 20 years experience as a beekeeper and bee-advocate. He will be a vital script and workshop/resource guide consultant, ensuring that the project will impart information vital to participants knowledge of science, biology, ecology.
*Milwaukee County Parks: Charlie is beekeeper of the Milwaukee County Parks and will work to coordinate Bee the Change programing to Park facilities including the Domes and several golf course pavilions.
*Groundwork Milwaukee ‘s mission is to bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships that empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic and social well-being. Damien De Buhr, Deputy Director of Programs & Operations, will facilitate programming in many of Milwaukee’s underserved neighborhoods.
*Arts@Large provides yearly arts programming in 55 Milwaukee County K-12 schools reaching over 12,000 students. They will help to promote the project with their constituents and will provide a potential performance space in their new facility in Bay View.
* Barbara Leigh, Theatre Ph.D., is the Co-Founder of Milwaukee Public Theatre with extensive experience creating original theatreworks about social, environmental and cultural issues as well as educational workshops and arts residencies. She is spearheading “Bee The Change”, raising funds, bringing partners together and researching and facilitating the Resource Guide, bookings and evaluations.
Program success will be gauged by our ability to reach targeted populations with active engagement and support. We anticipate the following results to be achieved by the end of the funding period. At least 70% of those surveyed will report that:
1) The program reached the targeted demographics: at least 800 children/family members/teachers from highly diverse populations, income levels and neighborhoods;
2) There was a high level of enjoyment/participation in the performance/workshops;
3) Program participants will have continued their commitment to our pollinators thru at least one related activity following the presentation/workshops.
The total budget for the project is $21,500. We have confirmed $4,200 in-kind support from our sponsors and program sites and staff and $2,900 cash support from individual donors. We will be requesting $300 from each of our eight sponsor sites, and are requesting the remaining $12,000 from local foundations with strong interest in education, the environment and the arts.
